Description

Turn your ideas into a reality with the LongMill Benchtop CNC

The LongMill helps you take your woodworking and fabrication to the next level. Its range of workable materials include: any species of wood, a variety of plasticssoft metals like aluminum and brass, and a variety of machinable foams and waxes for model making or metal casting. Make signs, engravings, mid-size furniture, stands and shelves, wooden toys and games, guitar bodies, and much more! (see more in our Gallery)

We offer our machine because CNC technology opens up a whole new world of making capabilities, especially to those who have a limited shop environment or budget. Our goal is to empower you by giving you access to both a machine that’s capable of a wide range of projects, and by assuring you of the assistance that you’ll receive from our team as well as our ever-growing community of machine owners: many of whom started off green to the world of CNC as well but are now happy to share what they’ve learned along the way. (see our Facebook group and Forum). We provide a complete set of resources and instructions to get you on your way to running your first job on your machine.

We designed the LongMill to be the best hobby CNC router in its class, offering rigidity, and reliability, while being easy to put together. With large extruded aluminum rails, fully supported Y-axes, 1/4″ steel gantries on all axes, and high precision MG-12 type linear guides on the Z-axis, the LongMill is the most powerful CNC router in its class and price point.

Every kit comes with all the…

Assembly only takes a few hours and can be done with a set of wrenches, Allen keys, and a flat head screwdriver. There is absolutely no soldering. We’ve spent thousands of hours designing and testing the LongMill to ensure that this machine is easy to put together. If you can put together IKEA furniture, then putting together the LongMill will be a breeze.

What do you provide?

  • Your own wasteboard/spoilboard (found at your local hardware store), this is the surface that you’ll be mounting your machine to. See the ‘Size’ tab above for more info.
  • A router (purchase one from us, use one you already have, or find one at your local hardware store/online)*

For routers, we recommend the Makita RT0700/RT0701. It’s a reliable and super powerful router that we’ve been using on our CNC machines for years.

For routers, we strongly recommend the Makita RT0700/RT0701. It’s reliable, powerful, is speed-adjustable to a large range (10-30K RPM), and its uniform outer body allows for versatile z-axis mounting. We’ve been using the Makita on our CNC machines for years.

There are some other compatible trim routers on the market that you could use – bear in mind we haven’t tested any of these in-depth:

  • Dewalt DWP611 (uses 71mm mount)
  • Carbide 3D Compact Router (uses 65mm mount)
  • Avid Power MW104 (uses 65mm mount)
  • MLCS Rocky 30 9056 (uses 65mm mount)
  • Ridgid R2401 (needs to adapt from 61mm to our 80mm mount to clear it’s ~6x15mm protruding body notch)
  • Bosch Colt PR20EVS (uses 71mm mount but sits much higher up than normal, you’ll have to space up your material)
  • Bosch Colt GKF125 (needs to adapt from 72mm to our 80mm mount, also sits much higher up than normal)

The LongMill can accommodate bore sizes of 52, 65, 71, and 80mm,  Don’t see your router listed? Let us know the diameter of your router so that we can make an adapter.

Please note that routers/spindles which are…

  • Over 2.7kg/6lbs
  • Wider than 80mm/3″

…may not be compatible. Please message us with your router size if you have a router that isn’t listed.

*Routers that we supply will be 110V only (North America). If you live in a country that uses a different voltage, please purchase a router in your region. LongMills will come with a power supply that supports both 110V and 220V.

The LongMill comes with free software and is compatible with dozens of other paid and free software. Try our Toolchain Wizard to get a quick recommendation for software that may work best for you.

Once assembled, each model of the LongMill (12×12, 12×30, and 30×30) is designed to generally fit on a 2×2′, 2×4′, and 4×4′ surface respectively. The diagrams below show a more detailed view for each model:
  • The red area inside the main box shows the cutting area as an offset from the foot base. It’s based off the center-point of the router, thus you can plane an area larger than what’s stated if you’re using a large surfacing bit.
  • The blue area outside the main box shows the hanging parts as an offset from the foot base which makes up the total machine outline.
  • If you have the dust shoe attachment in place, it’ll reduce your cutting travel in the X-dimension by approximately 50mm.
At the end of the day, this leaves you with:
Model LongMill 12×12 LongMill 12×30 LongMill 30×30
Cutting area 307mm x 345mm (~12″ x 13.5″) 792mm x 345mm (~31″ x 13.5″) 792mm x 845mm (~31″ x 33″)
Max stock width (distance between feet) 435mm (~17″) 920mm (~36″) 920mm (~36″)
Machine area 650mm x 610mm (~25.5″ x 24″) 1135mm x 610mm (~45″ x 24″) 1135mm x 1110mm (~45″ x 44″)
Machine height About 14″, but if you’re planning to build an enclosure you should make it at least 20″ tall to ensure enough space for hose management, manipulating cutting material, etc.
If you’re looking to properly size a space to put your machine or are making a dedicated table, ensure that you leave enough room for the LongMills control box and any other peripherals that you might be using like a laptop, monitor, keyboard, etc.. The control box is roughly 150mm x 280mm, has holes so that it can be easily screwed or mounted to any surface, and has a USB port on its left side which allows for you to connect your computer to control the machine. By default the clearance height under the X-axis rail is 104mm (~4″) so if you’d like to take advantage of the full 113mm (~4.5″) of Z-axis travel that the LongMill has to offer, the feet can be spaced up by two strips of material on each side to gain more height clearance. If you’d like to see some tables that our community members have built for their own machines, we’ve got a page on it here: Community Table Builds

Add-ons

You can include add-ons to improve the functionality of the LongMill. These are all optional.

Trim Router

We recommend using the Makita RT0700/RT0701 router 110V with your LongMill. This router comes with speed control from 10,000 to 30,000RPM and has 1.25HP of power. This router is compatible with 1/4″ shank tooling and can be adapted to 1/8″ shank tooling using a 1/4″ to 1/8″ collet adapter.

Dust Shoe

Our Z-axis independent, magnetic dust shoe allows you to attach standard vacuum hoses to your CNC machine, allowing it to suck up dust as it’s cutting, making clean up easier and keeping dust out of the air. This dust shoe is adjustable in the Z direction, and the front bristles and vacuum hose can be easily detached to make it easy to change bits.

Touch Plate

Our 3-axis touch plate allows you to set the ‘origin’ or starting point of your cutting tool very accurately based off the surface of the material you’re going to be cutting. Place the touch plate onto the corner of the material to locate the cutting bit in both X, Y, and Z-directions to start your cutting job, or use it to set the Z-height of the tool to accomplish tool changes on more complicated projects.

Bit Starter kit

Our End Mill Starter Pack comes with a basic set of end mills to get your started for many projects you might have in mind. Each pack comes with:
  • 1/4″ Spiral Up Cut End Mill
  • 1/4″ Spiral Down Cut End Mill
  • 1/8″ Flat End Mill (x3)
  • 1/8″ Ballnose End Mill (x3)
  • 1/4″ to 1/8″ Collet Adapter

On the whole, I’m really enjoying the LongMill 30×30 and honestly wish I’d gotten it sooner.

I came into it having a lot of 3D printing experience and some reasonable experience with a small 3018 CNC. There is definitely a learning curve for CNC and even with some of the experience I had with the 3018 there’s always more to learn.

Machine assembly wasn’t hard but there were some things in the docs that were somewhat confusing (which have since been cleared up). There are definitely some things which I’m still less than solid on, like:

    – How tight should those delrin V wheels be? If they can be moved with my fingers at all, the machine vibrates a lot and doesn’t seem tight enough to the rails. The docs seem to conflict on this guidance.
    – How much vibration is OK? I had some issues early on where the machine wasn’t square and vibration signaled that it was going to lock up and be unable to move so I got gun-shy and started slamming on the e-stop with any vibration. However, I’m starting to break out of that habit and just trust the machine… and the vibration does rectify itself. Maybe I just need to lubricate it a bit more?
    – How do I tell how tight the backlash nuts are if I can’t see them? I can’t even get in there with an endoscope camera. The “you have to feel it” guidance doesn’t help if I can’t feel any movement even when the screw isn’t even in the backlash nut.

Customer service has been good so far. I haven’t really shipped anything internationally so I was caught off-guard by the extra fee. They were very patient with my ignorance and that’s appreciated.

I have so far been making some signs out of MDF and just running some tests to see how fast I can mill different woods with the power of the larger machine.

Feeds, speeds, and depth of cut seem to be a real challenge for me and other users – trying to figure out some “tried and true” guidance for it is hard and the same questions pop up a lot in the forums and Facebook group. (A more robust table of values than what’s on the LongMill Resources section would be awesome… or build a calculator into the new gSender?)

Another thing that seems to stump new users is what software to use. This is, again, a common question that comes up a lot in forums and Facebook. I think the software pages in the LongMill Resources section are good, but maybe some reorg to put the “wizard” at the top or make it more prominently accessible from the main software page would help new folks get going faster.

All of this is just part of the learning curve, though. The machine itself is great and has been turning out some beautiful results on my work so far. I’m so glad I got it!

I wanted to purchase a Canadian made mill made by a Canadian company. It was definitely the right decision. The machine is top notch, it worked after the build with no real issues and has taken every task I have put it through. I would 100% suggest anyone looking for a mill to seriously consider the Longmill. The quality and cost cannot be beat.

I didn’t have any experience with cnc
prior to buying the Longmill. Talking with Sienci over the phone made my decision easy. I’ve owned it for a year now and couldn’t be happier. Lots of fun and a great addition to my furniture business. I make signs, wall art, and do alot of acrylic carving. Haven’t done any 2.5 d stuff yet but I will. Great for making gifts. The customer service is the best I’ve ever experienced and I feel like I know the guys even though we’ve never met. The best part about the machine assembly was learning so much about the machine. The video made it very easy to put together.

My 12×30 LongMill was easy to assemble with no hitches other than x-axis delrin block alignment was off after mounting on the wasteboard but all works well now after fixing that. I’ve been too busy with other activities to spend much time with the LongMill. Slowly getting it running with Raspberry Pi as controller with bCNC – that took some time to learn also. Now connecting homing switches to hopefully make bCNC more useful. I have zero CNC experience so your guide to software was extremely helpful. I learned and entered g-codes into the bCNC command line along with jogging to create a vacuum hose adapter, by cutting rings of two diameters in a wood block. That was very sweet. I expect to use my LongMill to precisely cut wooden parts for various projects.
I look forward to your release of gSender for Pi to try instead of bCNC.
I first saw a LongMill at wood show V-carve seminar so it seems odd a v-bit was not provided with the machine. Your excellent selection of bits led me to order several including the 60 degree v so now ready for any job I decide to run.

I have zero experience with a CNC or woodworking aside from the occasional IKEA builds from time to time. I found the assembly was easy enough as long as you pay attention to the instructions and watched Chris’s video before the build. I would give everything a 10 out of 10 except for some of the 3D printed parts. Although they worked well, I found that some of them were not exactly easy to fit and assemble. Never had the chance to use Customer Service but the purchase and the delivery was smooth. I am just experimenting with signs using Easel and I found this to be the easiest software to use. Planning on testing other software soon if I could find some wood to cut for practice. Right now, I am relying on off-cuts and scraps from a cabinet maker. Thanks to the Scienci Team for coming up with a great product available in Canada.

The pricing is exceptional when you look at the quality and service after the sale.
Customer service has been right on top of my needs. Patrik has been a blessing when i screw up.
I had ZERO experience prior to ordering my Longmill, unless you count copious amounts of YouTube videos. Having this machine has challenged me in all the right ways.
I was concerned about the assembly process until I started. After beginning and seeing how well the instructions are laid out it seemed like everything came together very nicely.
I’m still doing pretty basic projects. Vector drawings, small signs and shapes. I recently found a good tutorial for my software on how to make bowl shapes and I am currently in the trial and error process with these.

I really cannot do justice to a review of my Longmill and the SIENCI group. Thanks to all for the support and encouragement thru the forum as well. These folks really know their stuff and many of them started just like I have.

This is my first machine so I don’t have anything to compare it to but I don’t regret going with the LongMill and have no “Machine Envy” so far and I can’t believe the value. Very impressed!
I am probably the most basic user you can imagine, just doing this as a supplement to my art habit. I am a stay at home dad and still managed to get this assembled in my rare free time thanks to great build instructions and support videos.
Thank you so much for making something quality in reach for someone like me. I am sure ill be using this for a very long time and so far I couldn’t be happier.

I had some woodworking experience and zero experience in CNC. Machine assembly was akin to a legit model car. It was a lot of fun to put together and the instructions were so easy to follow, it would be hard to make a mistake. I haven’t had to use customer support. The CNC is a tank and does exactly what it is supposed to, the way it is supposed. I have primarily been making signs, but have used it to add decorative touches to other wood projects. I am so glad I went with this CNC!

I am totally new to CNC and not the greatest of computer skills. Assembly was super easy with great assembly instructions. I’m unable to comment on customer service as I have not yet required an of your services but I see many positive comments from other Longmill owners about your prompt excellent service. I have made some cutting boards, coasters and heat duct vents and numerous other smaller projects. It has been very enjoyable to learn a new hobby with equipment that is easy to understand and use. I am very pleased with my Longmill and how well it works.
