Description

Turn your ideas into a reality with the LongMill Benchtop CNC

The LongMill helps you take your woodworking and fabrication to the next level. Its range of workable materials include: any species of wood, a variety of plasticssoft metals like aluminum and brass, and a variety of machinable foams and waxes for model making or metal casting. Make signs, engravings, mid-size furniture, stands and shelves, wooden toys and games, guitar bodies, and much more! (see more in our Gallery)

We offer our machine because CNC technology opens up a whole new world of making capabilities, especially to those who have a limited shop environment or budget. Our goal is to empower you by giving you access to both a machine that’s capable of a wide range of projects, and by assuring you of the assistance that you’ll receive from our team as well as our ever-growing community of machine owners: many of whom started off green to the world of CNC as well but are now happy to share what they’ve learned along the way. (see our Facebook group and Forum). We provide a complete set of resources and instructions to get you on your way to running your first job on your machine.

We designed the LongMill to be the best hobby CNC router in its class, offering rigidity, and reliability, while being easy to put together. With large extruded aluminum rails, fully supported Y-axes, 1/4″ steel gantries on all axes, and high precision MG-12 type linear guides on the Z-axis, the LongMill is the most powerful CNC router in its class and price point.

Every kit comes with all the…

Assembly only takes a few hours and can be done with a set of wrenches, Allen keys, and a flat head screwdriver. There is absolutely no soldering. We’ve spent thousands of hours designing and testing the LongMill to ensure that this machine is easy to put together. If you can put together IKEA furniture, then putting together the LongMill will be a breeze.

What do you provide?

  • Your own wasteboard/spoilboard (found at your local hardware store), this is the surface that you’ll be mounting your machine to. See the ‘Size’ tab above for more info.
  • A router (purchase one from us, use one you already have, or find one at your local hardware store/online)*

For routers, we recommend the Makita RT0700/RT0701. It’s a reliable and super powerful router that we’ve been using on our CNC machines for years.

For routers, we strongly recommend the Makita RT0700/RT0701. It’s reliable, powerful, is speed-adjustable to a large range (10-30K RPM), and its uniform outer body allows for versatile z-axis mounting. We’ve been using the Makita on our CNC machines for years.

There are some other compatible trim routers on the market that you could use – bear in mind we haven’t tested any of these in-depth:

  • Dewalt DWP611 (uses 71mm mount)
  • Carbide 3D Compact Router (uses 65mm mount)
  • Avid Power MW104 (uses 65mm mount)
  • MLCS Rocky 30 9056 (uses 65mm mount)
  • Ridgid R2401 (needs to adapt from 61mm to our 80mm mount to clear it’s ~6x15mm protruding body notch)
  • Bosch Colt PR20EVS (uses 71mm mount but sits much higher up than normal, you’ll have to space up your material)
  • Bosch Colt GKF125 (needs to adapt from 72mm to our 80mm mount, also sits much higher up than normal)

The LongMill can accommodate bore sizes of 52, 65, 71, and 80mm,  Don’t see your router listed? Let us know the diameter of your router so that we can make an adapter.

Please note that routers/spindles which are…

  • Over 2.7kg/6lbs
  • Wider than 80mm/3″

…may not be compatible. Please message us with your router size if you have a router that isn’t listed.

*Routers that we supply will be 110V only (North America). If you live in a country that uses a different voltage, please purchase a router in your region. LongMills will come with a power supply that supports both 110V and 220V.

The LongMill comes with free software and is compatible with dozens of other paid and free software. Try our Toolchain Wizard to get a quick recommendation for software that may work best for you.

Once assembled, each model of the LongMill (12×12, 12×30, and 30×30) is designed to generally fit on a 2×2′, 2×4′, and 4×4′ surface respectively. The diagrams below show a more detailed view for each model:
  • The red area inside the main box shows the cutting area as an offset from the foot base. It’s based off the center-point of the router, thus you can plane an area larger than what’s stated if you’re using a large surfacing bit.
  • The blue area outside the main box shows the hanging parts as an offset from the foot base which makes up the total machine outline.
  • If you have the dust shoe attachment in place, it’ll reduce your cutting travel in the X-dimension by approximately 50mm.
At the end of the day, this leaves you with:
Model LongMill 12×12 LongMill 12×30 LongMill 30×30
Cutting area 307mm x 345mm (~12″ x 13.5″) 792mm x 345mm (~31″ x 13.5″) 792mm x 845mm (~31″ x 33″)
Max stock width (distance between feet) 435mm (~17″) 920mm (~36″) 920mm (~36″)
Machine area 650mm x 610mm (~25.5″ x 24″) 1135mm x 610mm (~45″ x 24″) 1135mm x 1110mm (~45″ x 44″)
Machine height About 14″, but if you’re planning to build an enclosure you should make it at least 20″ tall to ensure enough space for hose management, manipulating cutting material, etc.
If you’re looking to properly size a space to put your machine or are making a dedicated table, ensure that you leave enough room for the LongMills control box and any other peripherals that you might be using like a laptop, monitor, keyboard, etc.. The control box is roughly 150mm x 280mm, has holes so that it can be easily screwed or mounted to any surface, and has a USB port on its left side which allows for you to connect your computer to control the machine. By default the clearance height under the X-axis rail is 104mm (~4″) so if you’d like to take advantage of the full 113mm (~4.5″) of Z-axis travel that the LongMill has to offer, the feet can be spaced up by two strips of material on each side to gain more height clearance. If you’d like to see some tables that our community members have built for their own machines, we’ve got a page on it here: Community Table Builds

Add-ons

You can include add-ons to improve the functionality of the LongMill. These are all optional.

Trim Router

We recommend using the Makita RT0700/RT0701 router 110V with your LongMill. This router comes with speed control from 10,000 to 30,000RPM and has 1.25HP of power. This router is compatible with 1/4″ shank tooling and can be adapted to 1/8″ shank tooling using a 1/4″ to 1/8″ collet adapter.

Dust Shoe

Our Z-axis independent, magnetic dust shoe allows you to attach standard vacuum hoses to your CNC machine, allowing it to suck up dust as it’s cutting, making clean up easier and keeping dust out of the air. This dust shoe is adjustable in the Z direction, and the front bristles and vacuum hose can be easily detached to make it easy to change bits.

Touch Plate

Our 3-axis touch plate allows you to set the ‘origin’ or starting point of your cutting tool very accurately based off the surface of the material you’re going to be cutting. Place the touch plate onto the corner of the material to locate the cutting bit in both X, Y, and Z-directions to start your cutting job, or use it to set the Z-height of the tool to accomplish tool changes on more complicated projects.

Bit Starter kit

Our End Mill Starter Pack comes with a basic set of end mills to get your started for many projects you might have in mind. Each pack comes with:
  • 1/4″ Spiral Up Cut End Mill
  • 1/4″ Spiral Down Cut End Mill
  • 1/8″ Flat End Mill (x3)
  • 1/8″ Ballnose End Mill (x3)
  • 1/4″ to 1/8″ Collet Adapter

I am a CNC machine tool operator for 35 years. The assembly was great no real issues.I have not needed any support from you as of yet sounds like there is plenty of support from everyone. I am still playing with the software and just cutting air for now, I have to understand that this is not like a $300000 dollar CNC I am used to running in steel, I will get the software down I have a 32 year old son in IT for a top 10 corporate company plenty of support there.

After doing a lot of research on various machines, I couldn’t be happier with my choice. The tipping point for me was the lead screw design of the LongMill over the belts of other hobby level CNC machines. I want to be able to machine with extreme accuracy and I felt that the belts would leave much more room for error. I also wanted to support a Canadian manufacturer and a company that is very engaged and supportive with it’s customer base. I am a woodworker by trade and I have very little experience with programming and electronics. I would say the assembly was more challenging than I anticipated and I would highly recommend following along with Sienci’s assembly videos on Youtube. Initially I built my machine using only the manual instructions and it was difficult to visualize a couple of the assemblies. Upon watching some videos my confusion was cleared up very quickly. Since assembly I have had a couple of issues with the machine (all minor mistakes on my end/loose bolts) and because I built the machine I was able to solve the problems quickly. I am extremely happy with Sienci’s forum as well. There is a ton of information available and the environment is supportive and inspiring. I am so happy that I chose to support this local company. I also purchased the dust boot, probe and various cutters from Sienci and I am very happy with their performance as well. For the price-point, footprint and capabilities, the LongMill has really exceeded my expectations.

Instructions for setup were easy to follow, all the parts went together easily. Only issue I had was that the hole type end link for holding the Y Axis drag chain on the left hand side broke, but a couple of small zip ties fixed that.
Love the speed and accuracy of this machine, lots of tutorials online for getting the most out of the Longmill and VCarve.

I’ve used a Carvey and a 16″ shapeoko before, and settled on the Long Mill as my Christmas present of choice for 2020, and was delighted to receive it! The design is outstanding, very rigid and easy to assemble. I’m currently warming up with some small items like stools, phone holders and the like, and getting the machine working as expected has been a ton of fun.

I believe that this machine is probably the best value of any hobbyist-targeted CNC; you won’t regret the purchase!

New to CNC and after looking around settled on the Longmill. Liked the overall design and price. No problems with assembly (the videos helped). The challenge for me is on the software side. I have done several test projects and the Longmill has worked flawlessly.

Works and looks great! Assembly was a bit long, with a little setback. Some parts , the eccentric nuts mounting the V-wheels were missing:… Customer service was very quick to furnish the missing parts. Great service! I am using the longmill in my garage to make tooling for the router. I haven’t started making any interesting items. I made a lexan cake smoother for my wife. I am working on clamps and tools to prepare for the actual parts I will be making soon.

Love this machine. I’ve destroyed many pieces of wood learning how to use it properly and I’ll be destroying more but the machine powers through and does what I tell it to do (most of the time incorrectly). I’d recommend this machine to anyone looking at getting into cnc projects. The Sienci customer service is the best I have seen of any company I’ve dealt with. Excellent!

I’m a hobby woodworker with profession IT experience and I ordered the CNC to take my hobby to the next level. After some research, it was clear to me that the LongMill offer the specification I needed at a good value price. The assembly of the CNC took some time but it was not difficult for people who are used to building or fixing things. The assembly video with Chris also really helped with this task. The quality of the LongMill at first glance is very good. Connecting and working with the machine using the recommended software was simple. I have no experience with using a CNC so I am learning to use it with some dry runs (without the router running) to see the designs I’ve made follow their intended cut paths. My first project will be to make clamps for my MFT spoil board. Sienci customer service is very responsive to my requests regarding the backlog time for when my order will be delivered. Patrik was very helpful to note when I would like my order to be delivery when it is available as I live in one country and work in another. Overall I would recommend buying from Sienci, its very good value for money especially for Canadians…Customs and tax for delivery to Europe (over 350 Euro) is a bit painful.

This is from a customer that has no programming background and average computer skills, but experienced woodworker.

The assembly video was fantastic. A few tough spots, but over all ok. I took me about 10 hours which is normal for me.

The only reason I would not rate it a 5 is because Sienci Labs should warn people how hard it is to operate on a Mac, which is what I have. The issue is Sienci doesn’t really have any operating programs, so I have to find one that works (which you would have to do with most CNC machines) and even though your support team was great, most of the time, they don’t have answers for the Mac. Finding programs for the Mac is an issue. Carbide Create is the program I use, combined with CNCJs. Programs seem to drop, in the middle of a program. According to the sites I was recommended to study (facebook) they attribute it to using a Mac. I should have done more homework on computer compatibility. (all CNC machines will have issues with Mac, not just yours.)

The machine itself operates fantastic. Still getting use to a few adjustments, but as advertised. I have done several projects in the first month, with each being more experimental. The internet (especially Etsy is full of SVG patterns).

Love the size (30 x 30). As far as the machine goes, I love it. It is just a blast. Every time I learn something new. I think you should offer more cutting tools with the start up kit, but ordered more and completely satisfied. Recommend the 60 degree Vee cutter right away for signs. Possibilities are endless. In the next 6 months, hoping to step up to the 3D programs. Using the CNC designs with my segmented bowls is working perfect.

In the first month I have made a puzzle tray, many different signs, Disney theme signs, desert designs for vases and bowls. A lot of the first month was primarily experimental.

I would recommend this machine to anybody that is interested getting into CNC. I shopped and studied, before deciding on Sienci Longmill. When you consider cost, SIZE and now see the performance it was definitely a good choice. Compare a 30×30 to anyone else. The only limits are one’s imagination.

I am a manufacturing Engineer and work with large CNC Mills and Lathes everyday so purchasing this CNC router gave me the opportunity to bring some of that knowledge home.

Assembly was went very smooth, as one who writes Standard work procedures I appreciated your clear instructions and the ease of installation.

The biggest challenge I have experienced was dealing with the software which I know is not programmed by Sienci…but as many other people have, I struggled with UGS being glitchy and stopping in the middle of carves. I am also on the fence between needing more advanced design software but not at the point where I can justify spending $20 to $100 a month on a subscription. It would be very nice to have a software provided with a $1400 dollar machine…maybe in the future…

Right now I have just been making signs, wall hangings, Christmas gifts, but I hope to be able to sell products in the future once I get the process streamlined a little bit and narrowed down to just a few styles that I can make repeatably without a long setup.

There was definitely a learning curve going from a standard mill cutting cast iron and aluminum to running the router, but overall it has been very forgiving and I have enjoyed the journey.

This is my second Longmill. I needed a second one to help me keep up with the projects I’m doing. Ordering was easy and the delivery date was expedited because of the Sienci folks working their butts off to fill orders. I was missing the small plastic shields for the dust shoe but they were put in the mail to me immediately. More spare parts need to be kept on hand, especially ones that are known to break down with heavy use.

Couldn’t be happier with the machine. The start was rough due to EMI issues but since this has gotten resolved, no further issues. The customer support is outstanding and the Facebook group is full of helpful users. I had little experience before working with this machine. I owned a MillOne v3 prior to this but quickly outgrew its capabilities.

I took my time assembling and it took about 7hours. Only difficulty was the worm nut for the Z axis, I had to leave it slightly loose. It just had too much friction moving if I tightened it right down, especially at the upper range. Strange because it didn’t look to be out of line.

I love the machine and have made seven 2D projects so far. Just simple things as I am learning the software.

Any idea where to actually find some free DXF clip art? Or SVG? Carbide Create Pro was supposed to include a library but I don’t seem to be accessing it.

Really proud of the table I built for the router. Used a bookshelf unit that I bought for one dollar from MaxSold

Owning the LongMill has been a lot of fun and a great experience. Great support from Sienci. I’ve seen fantastic dedication to their customers. So far I’ve used my LongMill to create signs, do inlay work, and a simple 3D carving. My current project is to build a Acoustic Dreadnaught style guitar. I will use my LongMill as one of many tools to accomplish that task. I just finished creating the forms and jigs to bend and form the sides. Next is create the 3D CADD design for a 15′ arch back. Also create the template for the location of the guitars interior braces. Will use the LongMill to route pockets for inlays on the headstock, Fretboard and Bridge. A near term future project is to build a Wood Compass wall art, using scrape wood from my guitar projects. One minor enhancement that would be nice is to have the Z-Axis motor mounted directly to XZ-Axis Gantry rather than the belt. I noticed Shapeoko is offering that now. Evidently they were getting a lot of complaints from their customers about belt drive slippage. Might help you get ahead of the curve. I’ve not had any problems with the belt on my LongMill and understand the belt drive here is different than Shapeoko’s original design. I just have the basic appreciation of fewer moving parts is always better. One additional comment, it would be interesting for LongMill customers to have a location to share their CAD/CAM files.

Sienci Labs is doing it right with the Longmill. Easy to put together and a very sturdy machine. I love the fact that its open source and easy to set up. If I can do it, anyone can. So far, every carve I have done has been spot on, and I’m a total noob at this. Andy and Chris, thank you for an affordable, awesome cnc machine.

Very user-friendly, especially for someone new to Cnc machines. The team at Sienci has been wonderful as well. I broke a part during assembly (user error), and they overnight shipped a piece to me so I could continue working!

longmill works great! The only problem I’ve had the 8 bolts on the Zaxes slides came loose. I think they should have thread locker on them. Assembly was easy and chris’s videos helped a lot. I am a retired truck driver and not looking to make money with my mill. It’s only a hobby for me. Using easel I’ve made a toy box, several game boards, hold down clamps and knobs, coasters from sample flooring, couple of signs and a boat stand for a r/c boat. Next up is window cornices and I’m looking forward to trying aluminum r/c boat parts. I would like to know how the numbers on the makita router relate to rpms. Thank you for making a quality mill at an affordable price.

I have been interested in CNC machinery for a number of years but have always thought that such equipment was too expensive until I came across the longmill. It took a lot of research before committing to buying my longmill and I have to say I am well impressed with the entire service and equipment provided by Sienci. Right from the off you knew where your order was in the supply chain and how long you had to wait for delivery. The updates regarding the status of the machine throughout this period was real time. Once arrived I started into the assembly which was guided by very detailed step by step online assembly instructions. Once assembled I got stuck into the software side of things which I found to be quite manageable having been used to cad software previously and which was a massive help when trying to put your design to reality. I think without this experience the learning process would have taken a lot longer. I now have the machine nearly 2 months and to date all my projects are 2d signs and letter carving. I need to build up my tooling inventory to expand my creations. Overall a great sturdy piece of machinery very well priced with great online videos and guides to get you CNC’ing. 5 stars.

I ordered this on backorder and boy was it worth the wait. Once the cnc shipped it arrived early, which was great. Machine assembly was easy and straight forward. Unfortunately I did not receive the m5 nylock nuts, but I contacted them and they had them shipped to me within 2 days, that’s great customer service. I would definitely recommend the longmill to anyone looking to get into cnc machining at an affordable price with a quality product, great company and wonderful community.
