FAQ
Which versions of the LongMill is this kit compatible with?
This kit is plug-and-play compatible with all LongMills using the SuperLongBoard (SLB). If you have an MK1 or MK2 with an original LongBoard, we highly recommend updating the controller to SLB. LongMill MK2.5 comes with SLB by default and does not need to be purchased separately.
Why do I need the SLB to be able to use the Spindle Kit?
While it is possible to adapt this Spindle Kit for use on the LongBoard, there are key disadvantages that you should be aware of:
- We will consider this a DIY configuration and support and resources will be limited.
- Start-stop control will be unavailable without a reflash of the firmware and additional components
- The VFD will have to be re-programmed
- Holding current must be applied in full which can overheat the drivers and motors
- No stall detection or any other advanced features that are currently in development
- High-speed machine movements (>4000mm/min) that suit the spindle are unavailable due to legacy driver stability issues.
Furthermore, the SLB offers a number of features including:
- Exact control of the RPM of the spindle
- Detection of stalling and other errors and automatically stop cuts through gSender
- Ability for the spindle to get up to speed before starting the cut
Is there a difference between the LongMill Spindle and Dust Shoe Kit and the AltMill Spindle and Dust Shoe Kit?
The only difference between these two kits is that the LongMill version comes with the 80mm mount which is needed to mount the spindle to the Z-axis. If you already have a spindle kit, then you can buy it here separately.
Why are you offering an air-cooled spindle versus a water-cooled spindle?
The main reason is to keep the kit simple. A water-cooled spindle is quieter, but we felt like the small difference in sound is not worth the added complexity and failure points. The air-cooled spindle is still very quiet, especially compared to the Makita RT0701 or other similar palm routers.
What are the electrical requirements for the LongMill Spindle?
You will need one 15A circuit, which should sufficiently power the machine and spindle together. However it is recommended that you put your dust collection system on another circuit.
