Laser Focusing Lenses

Every laser system comes with a G2 lens. Other lenses can add additional focusing options for your laser.

Focal length

When we talk about focal length for focusing the laser, we are talking about the point where the beam of the laser is at its finest. This is the most optimal point for cutting and engraving as it allows the full power of the laser to be concentrated at the finest point. Depending on your lens, your focal point can vary from very close (30mm) to very far (85mm). A lens with a long focal length works best for high precision engraving and uneven materials, as the beam’s diameter varies less over its distance, whereas a lens with a shorter focal length loses less power over the distance it travels from the diode to the material, making it better for cutting and high power applications.

Efficiency

Some of the power from the laser diode is lost as it reflects off or passes through the lens as well as when it passes through the air. Depending on the lens design, the number of lens elements it has, and the amount of distance the laser beam needs to travel through the air (based on its focal length), the overall efficiency of the lens can vary.

G2 Lens (30mm focal length)

The G2 Lens boasts an efficiency of  95% but reduced precision by increasing the beam profile and divergence. This lens maximizes the power of the diode, ideal for rapid close-range burning and cutting.

G7 Lens (85mm focal length)

The G7 lens has an 88% efficiency and long focal length. This lens strikes a balance between the precision of the 3-element and the power output of the G2, this lens serves as an exceptional all-around option.

G8 Lens (70mm focal length)

The G8 has a 90% efficiency and offers similar advantages to the G7 lens with a slightly shorter focal length.

3 Element Lens (65mm focal length)

The 3 element lens offers a tight beam with a clean profile at the cost of some output power, running at an efficiency of 70%. This lens also has a long focal length, and low divergence; making it a great precision lens.

Safety

Safety

The LaserBeam and any other laser device can cause harm to you or others. Ensure that you follow these safety guidelines

Never let the laser run unattended

Ensure that you have a fire suppression system such as a fire extinguisher nearby in case of a fire. Never leave your laser unattended. Ensure that your laser is turned off when not in use.

Ensure proper ventilation

Use the laser in a well-ventilated environment. Fumes and particulates from cutting or engraving can be harmful. We recommend having a fume extraction system or having an open door or window to provide ventilation.

Wear Eye Protection

Wear compatible laser safety goggles or glasses. Not wearing appropriate eye protection may cause permanent eye damage.

The FDA recommends no more than 5 mw to avoid eye damage. The glasses sold are rated for 0.007 mw or over 700 times better at reducing laser exposure significantly more than the minimum requirement.

Cut only laser safe materials

Never cut materials that can generate toxic fumes or are dangerous to cut, such as

  • PVC
  • ABS
  • Vinyl
  • Fiberglass

Integrated Driver Safety Features

Key Switch: This key is needed to enable the laser. Once the key switch is turned on, the laser is enabled and the key cannot come out. Only when the driver is off can You can only remove the key.

Remote Interlocks: This allows for additional switches to be added to the laser. An E-stop or other system can be implemented to shut the laser down in the case of an emergency.

Power Fault Protection: If the driver ever loses power the laser will turn off. In case of a power outage, you can have peace of mind knowing that the laser is off whenever power returns.

Emission Indicator: The small LED on the LaserBeam driver will notify you if the laser is on. This becomes useful if operating outside the visible light spectrum

FAQ

Why does the LaserBeam exist?

We created the LaserBeam to tackle several issues our users have had with using other laser systems with their machines:

Inconsistent performance

Many low-cost lasers advertise a high laser power, but these ratings only show the peak power of the laser module, or laser modules are using lower rated diodes that have been overclocked to output higher wattages. This results in a lower lifespan of the lasers, as well as inconsistent cutting and engraving power.

The LaserBeam is designed, tested, and rated for continual use rated at 7 watts, which means you can expect high performance and consistent results every time.

Lack of support

Many users have found that the lack of resources and support from laser suppliers has made it difficult to set up their lasers properly.

The LightBurn is plug-and-play for LongMills, as well as with additional resources and technical support to make adding a laser simple.

Can I use the laser for machines other than the LongMill?

At the time of writing, the LaserBeam system has only been tested on the LongMill. We cannot guarantee that this system will work with other devices.  However, we are planning to test compatibility with other CNC machines and systems in the future. Users that are interested in tinkering with the laser should be able to make the LaserBurn compatible with most GRBL based CNC machines and 3D printers using the TTL/PWM input system.

When will the Laser ship?

Batch 1 Pre-orders (ordered between May 14th 2021 – November 5th 2021) have been shipped as of January 12th 2022

Batch 2 Pre-orders (November 6th 2021 – February 28th 2022) will ship before the end of February 2022.

My first Laser so can’t really compare, I didn’t like the instructions on focusing, feels unsafe and that it could be somehow better, it’s a bit frustrating that it will sometimes cut through with x passes and sometimes it doesn’t (on same material), I guess I need to better learn how to use it and the gotchas it has, but still feels lacking in information

this comment is for the long mill it has worked very well was easy to set up had no problem adapting to it the only problem is i had the program stop in the middle of the carving dont know why just hit resume and it starts right up . i think on the 48 inch x axis it needs a larger motor or one on each side. other than that this machine is easy to use and works very well . i also lubricate with silicone .

Very happy with my purchase. Bought it on a whim and have found more uses for it then I ever thought I ever would. The folks at the Wood Show that were showcasing this product really took the time to chat with me. Answering all of my ( annoying ) questions and really portrayed interest in educating before buying. Support with Sience Labs is always prompt and thorough to solving any hiccups that may arise. I hope they expand this product line as I would be happy to invest more into it in the future.

I was very happy with the laser. I was using light burn (as you recommended). I did several different burns, all successfully. Then I did routing, first the spoilboard. The router was tilted top back. A 1.05 pass was creating a .007 step. I have a machinist training, and figured out what to loosen and where to shim to correct that problem. I have ideas on how to make that adjustable… but back to light burn. I decided to do some more burning. The trial was getting close to the end, so I purchased the license through your website. When I put the license into the program, it will run part of a burn then shuts Gsender off, it just disappears from the screen. I have found no way to contact them to find a fix. I downloaded the trial on another computer, did a design and burn successfully. So with the licensed program you recommend the laser is basically useless. Maybe y’all can help!

Worked great out of the box! Easy to set up, and I was burning things in an hour. The only suggestion I’d make is to swap connectors on the two fan wire connections that are identical, swap a male and female around so they can’t be plugged in wrong.

Assembly was easy. Learning how to turn it on and use it was difficult. Other than the learning curve (which I’m still on), the only issue I have had is that the laser causes interference with the dust shoe when the router is cutting deep (3/4″ or more). I even had the router cut through the first dust shoe when it got knocked off due to the laser pushing down on it. Once I figured out the problem, I remove the laser when not using it. It would be a nice improvement to have it slide up further or to have slots so that the bolts don’t have to be removed to take the laser off.

Good addition to the CNC. A standalone laser system would perform faster and offer material cutting but for what I’m doing, it works just fine and I have no intentions of moving away from it

Simple to install, simple to changeover from milling to the laser. Powerful enough for the laser engravings I have done. Great way to add laser engraving to my products.
